Kolkata: In an unusual turn of events, the West Bengal police have busted a theft ring and solved not one, but six cases of burglary, all thanks to a crucial clue found in a Facebook status update. This unique case highlights the surprising ways social media can aid law enforcement.
Maid’s Facebook Status Leads to Breakthrough
The full story unfolded in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, where six separate burglaries had occurred in different homes. The police recently cracked these cases and arrested five individuals, including the prime suspect. Superintendent of Police, Pratiksha Jharkharia, provided details on the gang’s unraveling, emphasizing the unexpected role of Facebook.
The key to solving the thefts came from a complaint filed by Asish Dasgupta. He reported that a woman named Puja Sardar, who worked as a domestic helper in his sister’s house, had posted pictures from a wedding ceremony on her Facebook status. In these pictures, she was seen wearing two saris belonging to Dasgupta’s wife. This pivotal detail immediately raised suspicion, and the family informed the police.
Stolen Jewelry and Saris Recovered, Five Arrested
Acting on the Facebook status screenshots and the family’s statements, the police launched an investigation. A search at Puja Sardar’s residence yielded several valuable pieces of jewelry and saris, confirming the family’s suspicions.
Following the recovery, the police arrested Puja Sardar along with four of her accomplices. All five have been sent to jail. The recovered jewelry and saris have been returned to their rightful owners. This incident serves as a peculiar yet effective example of how digital footprints can lead to the unmasking of criminals.
